1. After the Revolutionary War, the
American states were independent from Britain. They needed a system
of government to run the nation. However, before the Constitution
was written, the states had another system of government first.
What was this system called?
3. The Founding Fathers, or the men who met to write
the Constitution, met in Philadelphia in the year 1787 to make changes
to the current system of government (what was that called again?)
What did the Founding Fathers ultimately decide to do?
Keep the Articles of Confederation
Make a few changes to the Articles of Confederation
Set aside the Articles and write a new constitution
Delegates
from 12 of the 13 states met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
to write the Constitution. The meeting was referred to as
the Constitutional Convention and
George Washington was the president of the convention. Thomas
Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence, was
not there.
