Classifying Quadrilaterals

Students should be able to:
Classify and describe quadrilaterals by using their properties; e.g., interior angle measures, perpendicular/parallel sides, congruent angles/sides.

Rectangles have the following properties:

  • Opposite sides equal & parallel
  • All right angles

Use this mini-movie on your SMARTBoard

Click on the sides buttons below the rectangle to see the which sides are parallel and congruent. Click the angles button to see the right angles.
  • Note that since all of the angles are right angles, they are also congruent.
  • Because their opposite sides are parallel, rectangles are also classified as parallelograms.
  • We use the following symbols to show congruent sides and angles:

Squares have the following properties:

  • All sides equal
  • Opposite sides parallel
  • All 90º angles
Click on the sides buttons below the square to see the which sides are parallel and congruent. Click the angles button to see the right angles.
  • Note that since all of the angles are right angles, they are also congruent.
  • Because their opposite sides are parallel, squares are also classified as parallelograms.
  • Since all their sides are congruent, squares are also rhombi (rhombus).
  • Finally, squares are also rectangles because their opposite sides are congruent.
  • We use the following symbols to show congruent sides and angles:
