Classifying Triangles

Students should be able to:

Classify and describe triangles by using their properties; e.g., interior angle measures, congruent angles/sides.

Triangles are classified by the length of their sides and angle measures:

  • Equilateral
  • Iscosceles
  • Scalene

Triangles can also be classified only by the measure of their angles:

  • Right
  • Acute
  • Obtuse

More on Equilateral Triangles

  • Because they are equal, or congruent, the measure of each angle in an equilateral triangle is 60º. This means that an equilateral triangle is also equiangular.
  • If each angle is congruent, then each side is also congruent.
  • To show that a triangle is equilateral, we use the following symbols:

More on Isosceles Triangles

  • The two equal sides are called the legs of the triangle. The third side is called the base.
  • If the legs of the triangle are congruent, then the angles opposite each leg are congruent.
  • To show that a triangle is isosceles, we use the following symbols:

No Angles Equal

More on Scalene Triangles

  • Though the angles all have different measures, they still must add to 180³.
  • To show that a triangle is scalene, we use the following symbols:
